How to Install LED Lights in Your MGEX Unicorn Gundam: Complete Guide

Step-by-step installation guide for the KOSMOS LED Kit

The MGEX Unicorn Gundam is engineered for illumination. Its internal frame includes dedicated channels for LED routing, and the psycho-frame parts are translucent specifically to glow when lit.

The KOSMOS LED Light Kit is designed to take advantage of this engineering — offering four-zone RGB control without requiring modifications to the Bandai kit.

This guide walks through the installation process based on product documentation and community installation practices.

• Bandai MGEX 1/100 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam kit (fully assembled inner frame)
• KOSMOS MGEX Unicorn LED Light Kit (all components)
• Power source: batteries (type specified in packaging) or USB 5V
• Smartphone with KOSMOS UNIVERSE App (iOS/Android, Bluetooth 4.0+)

• Fine-tip tweezers (for cable routing)

⚠️ Critical First Step: Test Before Installing

This cannot be emphasized enough: Test all LED components before installation.

1. Unpack all LED modules from the KOSMOS kit
2. Connect them to the controller/battery box
3. Power on and verify:
   • All four zones illuminate ✅
   • Colors change correctly ✅
   • App connectivity works ✅
   • Remote control functions ✅

If any component fails, contact Takara Model Studio support immediately. Once LEDs are installed in the model, replacements may not be available.

The KOSMOS kit is designed to install into a completed inner frame.

1. Build the MGEX inner frame per Bandai's instructions
2. Do not install external armor yet — you'll need access to the internal channels
3. Verify the transformation mechanism between Unicorn and Destroy modes works smoothly
4. Familiarize yourself with the internal structure and cable routing paths

Key MGEX internal features for LED installation:

• Central spine channel (main cable trunk)
• Shoulder routing paths
• Head cavity for eye LED
• Leg internal channels
• Shield connection point

Before connecting anything, plan the routing:

1. Main trunk: Controller/battery box → central spine → distribution to limbs
2. Left body zone: Route to left shoulder and torso
3. Right body zone: Route to right shoulder and torso
4. Eye zone: Route up through neck to head
5. Shield zone: Route to shield connection arm

The MGEX has limited internal space. Plan paths that avoid the transformation mechanism, don't interfere with joint movement, and keep cables away from sharp edges.

Step 3: Body LED Modules

Left Half Body Zone: Locate the left shoulder and torso psycho-frame elements. Position the left body LED strip along the internal frame. Route the cable through the shoulder joint area. Connect to the main controller.

Right Half Body Zone: Repeat the process for the right side. Ensure symmetrical cable routing.

Step 4: Eye LED Module

The monoeye is the most visible LED element.

1. Access the head unit (may require partial disassembly)
2. Locate the eye sensor cavity
3. Insert the eye LED module into the cavity
4. Route the cable down through the neck joint
5. Connect to the controller

Step 5: Shield LED Module

1. Access the shield connection point on the arm
2. Route the shield LED cable through the arm frame
3. Connect to the LED module in the shield
4. Ensure the cable doesn't interfere with the shield's ability to attach/detach

Step 6: Install the Controller and Power

Controller Placement: The controller can be positioned inside the lower torso (if space permits), externally hidden behind the display base, or in a custom housing near the display.

Power Connection: Battery option — Install batteries in the included battery box, connect to controller, position battery box for easy access. USB option — Connect USB cable to controller, route cable out of the model to your USB power source.

Step 7: Test Again (Pre-Armor)

Before closing up the external armor:

1. Power on the system
2. Test all four zones
3. Verify app connectivity
4. Test remote control
5. Move joints through full range to check for cable interference
6. Verify transformation between Unicorn and Destroy modes still works

If anything doesn't work: Now is the time to fix it. Once the armor is on, access is extremely limited.

Step 8: Reassemble External Armor

This is the most delicate phase.

1. Refer to Bandai's instructions for armor assembly
2. Install armor panels carefully, watching for cable pinch points
3. Work slowly — forcing armor pieces can damage LEDs
4. If resistance is felt, stop and check cable routing
5. Verify each section before moving to the next

Critical areas to watch:

• Shoulder armor (cable entry points)
• Chest armor (central spine area)
• Head armor (neck joint)
• Shield attachment (arm routing)

Step 9: Final Testing

With the model fully assembled:

1. Power on and verify all zones work
2. Test app control and remote
3. Try different lighting modes and colors
4. Test transformation (Unicorn ↔ Destroy modes)
5. Verify all joints maintain full range of motion
