How to Install and Optimize
Your Johnny RX-78-2 Shield Keycap
Step-by-step installation guide: compatibility check, removal, installation, RGB optimization, and long-term care.
Before You Start: Compatibility Check
The Johnny RX-78-2 Shield Keycap fits most mechanical keyboards, but verification prevents disappointment.
Stem Depth Specification
The Johnny keycap accommodates stem depths from 3.5mm to 6.0mm. This covers standard plate-mount switches, most PCB-mount configurations, and common aftermarket modifications.
| Switch Type | Compatible? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry MX | ✅ Yes | Original standard, perfect fit |
| Gateron, Kailh, Outemu | ✅ Yes | Industry-standard stem |
| Optical mechanical | ✅ Yes | Optical sensing doesn't affect stem |
| LG low-profile | ✅ Yes | Specifically supported |
| Razer Green/Orange/Yellow | ⚠️ Check | Must be MX-style stem |
| Logitech Romer-G | ❌ No | Proprietary stem |
| Topre / Alps | ❌ No | Incompatible stem design |
Tools You'll Need
- Wire keycap puller (strongly preferred over ring pullers)
- Soft cloth or towel (to rest keyboard on)
- Optional: Compressed air for cleaning
Avoid ring-style pullers for this installation. The wire puller distributes force evenly and won't scratch the PBT surface or your keyboard's plate.
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
- Power down your keyboard (unplug USB cable)
- Place keyboard on soft surface (prevents scratches, provides stability)
- Photograph your current keycap layout (reference if you remove multiple caps)
- Identify your target key (default: Backspace)
The Johnny shield ships configured for Backspace (2u width). While the MX stem fits any position, the width should match your target key.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Keycap
Using a Wire Puller
- Hook both wire loops under opposite corners of the keycap
- Apply even upward pressure—don't pry from one side
- Pull straight up until the stem releases
- Set aside the original keycap (store for future use)
Critical: Don't Do This
- ❌ Twist or rock the keycap (stretches the stem mount)
- ❌ Use excessive force (can damage the switch)
- ❌ Pull from one edge only (bends the stem)
Step 3: Clean the Switch
- Inspect the switch stem for damage or debris
- Blow out dust with compressed air (optional)
- Wipe the switch housing with a dry cloth if needed
- Check the surrounding keycaps for alignment
This is your best opportunity to clean—take advantage of it.
Step 4: Install the Johnny Shield Keycap
Alignment
- Orient the shield design correctly (the "top" of the shield faces away from you when typing)
- Position the keycap directly above the switch stem
- Align the cross-shaped stem mount with the switch stem
Installation
- Place keycap gently onto the stem
- Apply even downward pressure with both thumbs
- Press until you feel/hear a click (the stem locking into place)
- Test by pressing the key—it should move smoothly with the switch
Step 5: RGB Optimization
The Johnny shield is RGB-compatible (light shines through) but not self-illuminating. Here's how to maximize the effect.
Color Recommendations
Based on the RX-78-2 color scheme:
- White/Cool White: Matches the shield's base color, subtle enhancement
- Red: Accentuates the EFSF and heat-dissipation details
- Blue: Complements the joint/coolant color elements
- Yellow/Gold: Highlights the Core Fighter pattern engraving
Long-Term Care
Monthly Maintenance
- Remove keycap using wire puller
- Rinse with lukewarm water (no soap needed)
- Pat dry with microfiber cloth
- Allow to air dry completely before reinstalling
What to Avoid
- ❌ Abrasive cleaners (damage nano-coating)
- ❌ Alcohol or solvents (can affect resin components)
- ❌ Ultrasonic cleaners (unnecessary for PBT)
- ❌ Dishwasher (heat and detergent too aggressive)
- ❌ Direct sunlight storage (UV exposure over time)
