⚠️ Before You Begin

The KOSMOS LED Light Set uses a plug-and-play connection system — no soldering required. However, the FPC lighting strips must be routed through the model's internal skeleton during the assembly process, not after the model is finished.

If your Sky Defender is already fully assembled, you will need to partially disassemble the wing frame sections and torso to route the strips correctly.

Installation Overview

The LED system covers four zones. Each zone is installed during a specific phase of model assembly:

Zone When to Install
Wings During wing frame assembly, before outer wing panels are attached
Weapon Array (rail gun) Via magnetic connector — attaches last, after full assembly
Cockpit During torso/body frame assembly, before closing torso halves
Vents Before final vent panel attachment

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Step 1 — Unpack and Test Before Assembly

Before installing any components, connect all LED strips and the battery unit and power them on. Verify that all zones light up correctly. Take a photo of the working state — this documentation is essential if any components need warranty replacement.

If any LEDs do not light up: contact the retailer before proceeding with installation.

Step 2 — Install the Battery Compartment

Locate the body/torso inner frame. The battery compartment fits within the body cavity. Route the main power cable along the central frame channel before closing the front and rear torso sections. Leave the torso armor open until the cockpit LED zone is installed (Step 4).

Step 3 — Route the Wing FPC Strips

The wing sections are the most critical routing area. The FPC strips must be laid flat against the inner wing frame ribs before the outer panels are closed.

  • Begin with the wing inner frame assembled but outer wing panels not yet attached
  • Lay the FPC strip along the frame rib, following the strip's pre-shaped curve
  • The strip should sit between the inner frame and outer panel — not visible from the exterior
  • Gently close the outer panels over it — the FPC's thickness is negligible and should not cause panel gaps
Key tip: Do not fold or crease the FPC strips at sharp angles. The strips bend smoothly around curves, but a sharp crease can damage the internal circuit traces. Follow the natural curve of the wing structure.

Step 4 — Install the Cockpit LED Zone

With the torso frame open (front and rear halves separated), position the cockpit LED ring around the cockpit hatch opening. Route the cable rearward along the inside of the frame, connect to the central power distribution point, then close the torso halves. Test the cockpit zone before sealing the torso armor. The 360° ring ensures even illumination through the canopy from all viewing angles.

Step 5 — Install the Vent Accent Lighting

Before attaching vent panels to the body, position the vent LED strip against the inner surface of each vent panel. Route the cable through the gap between vent panel and inner frame. Connect before final vent panel attachment.

Step 6 — Connect the Magnetic Rail Gun Connector

The rail gun connection is the last electrical connection made. Assemble the rail gun unit, then align the magnetic connector from the LED system to the rail gun mount contact point. The connector will seat with a click.

The magnetic design allows the rail gun to be detached and reattached without disconnecting any wiring — useful for transport or display pose changes.

Step 7 — Final Test

Insert 3× AAA lithium batteries into the battery compartment. Power on using the wireless remote and cycle through all 16 modes to verify all four zones respond correctly. Check for any loose connections by gently flexing each wing section while the model is powered on.

Step 8 — Wireless Remote Setup

Mode Type Effect
Steady color Single color at full brightness
Breathing Color fades in and out slowly
Fade Gradual transition through color range
Strobe Rapid flash effect

Troubleshooting

Issue Check
One zone does not light up Check the connection point for that zone — may be unseated
Cockpit zone is dim Verify the cockpit LED ring is fully connected to the power distribution point
Rail gun zone does not respond Re-seat the magnetic connector — it may not have clicked fully
Remote does not control LEDs Check battery orientation in both the model and remote; try cycling power off/on
FPC strip visible through panel gap The strip may be folded rather than laid flat — partial disassembly of that panel required to re-route

Display Recommendations

  • Dim or dark environment — Wing illumination is most impactful against a dark background
  • Display case with dark interior backing — Maximizes the visual depth of the LED glow
  • Elevated stand — The 50cm wingspan displays best when visible from the front at full width
  • Photography tip — Dark gray or black background cloth, room lights off, close range — captures LED glow without washing out surface detail

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I install this kit after my Sky Defender is already assembled?

The FPC strips for wings and cockpit need to be routed during assembly. If your model is complete, you will need to partially disassemble those wing frame and torso sections to route the strips correctly. The rail gun connects via magnetic snap and requires no disassembly.

Q: What's the most difficult part of the installation?

The wing section routing requires the most care. The FPC strips must lie flat against the inner wing ribs without sharp folds or creases. Take your time with this section and do not close the outer panels until the strip is correctly positioned.

Q: Is soldering required?

No. All connections are plug-and-play. The magnetic connector for the rail gun is tool-free. No soldering, cutting, or adhesive is required anywhere in the installation process.

Q: Can I remove the LED kit if I change my mind?

The FPC strips are routed under the armor panels. Removing them requires disassembling the wing and torso sections. The magnetic rail gun connector can be detached instantly without any disassembly.

Q: The remote is not responding. What should I check?

First, check that batteries in both the remote and the model are correctly oriented. Try cycling the power off and on. Ensure the remote is within approximately 5–10 meters of the model. If the issue persists after these checks, contact the retailer.

Q: How do I change the lighting mode?

Use the wireless remote to cycle through the 16 available modes. Each press of the mode button advances to the next mode in sequence. Refer to the included manual for the full mode list and button mapping.
